My name is Sarah Lucas, and I'm a licensed professional counselor in Denver, Colorado. I was born in North Carolina and have Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Studio Art from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and a Master's degree in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I work with adolescents and adults experiencing a range of issues including anxiety, depression, transitions, pre- and post-partum difficulties, and relationship struggles. I utilize multiple therapies including CBT, DBT, and ACT to create a treatment plan that suits each client's unique needs. I hope you leave every session with me feeling empowered, supported, and more compassionate towards yourself. I want to help you navigate transitions and design your life with courage and confidence. We'll open up, talk goals, make plans, and work together to help you feel good. Along the way, I'll be here beside you to remind you that you are wonderful, just as you are.
I believe that with the right support we can make small intentional changes to create a satisfying life. I am committed to helping clients feel understood and respected. I help clients identify strategies to alleviate symptoms, modify problematic patterns, and develop effective coping skills. I provide compassionate care and tailor empirically supported treatments. I primarily utilize mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapies and strategies informed by dialectical behavior therapy. These therapies provide symptom alleviation, are well established treatments, and have long term benefits. I have experience and success treating anxiety disorders, unipolar and bipolar depression, self-harm behaviors, low self-esteem, emotion dysregulation, grief, and difficulties associated with navigating transitions. Lastly, I conduct comprehensive psychological evaluations for specific learning disabilities, ADHD, and complex mental health disorders. Therapy shouldn’t feel like a clinical interrogation. After seven years working with young people inside Colorado schools, I know that just opening up to someone new takes incredible guts. Because effective therapy relies on a strong therapeutic alliance, I prioritize tailored human connection over rigid assessment & clinical stuffiness, laying the groundwork for us to work as true partners in the process.
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns that can throw us off course. That’s why it is important to carve out the time to talk through what’s going on and to thoughtfully plan next steps. I specialize in supporting those who have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, experience disordered eating, or struggle with body image issues. I have extensive experience working with those who struggle with anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, and stress. I wholeheartedly believe everyone deserves respectful and supportive care, no matter your body, shape, size, race, religion, gender or diagnosis. My passion lies in instilling hope that recovery and wellness is possible – and worth it! It would be a privilege to walk alongside you as you navigate this journey.
My approach to mental health counseling and high performance psychology does not focus simply on getting rid of challenges and difficulty, but rather aspires to honor what is good and right about you, and what makes each day worth living according to your beliefs, identities, values, and enriching relationships. Ultimately, I hope to help students like you move towards empowering the identities and values most important to you, building enriching relationships, and thriving in your chosen passions. I offer in person services in Lawrence, KS, and telehealth services across 42 states (https://psypact.gov/page/psypactmap). I have extensive experience and passion working with undergraduate and graduate students, including student-athletes, and students who identify as autistic and/or have been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. My aim is to provide a space that invites exploration of challenging yet vital places of growth in the service of what is most important to you in your life and performance space. In particular, I love supporting students' resilience to shame ("not enoughness"), self-criticism, pressure to be perfect, social and performance anxiety, body image concerns, grief and loss, panic, and trauma. At my core, I am inspired by feminist and multicultural approaches to healing that seek to interrupt systems of oppression that impact you. From that core, I use trauma-informed, evidence-based methods like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and self-compassion to support you in taking action towards what matters even in the presence of challenge. Finding a good fit is so vital to your counseling or sport psychology wants, and can be such an emotionally taxing journey. After an initial meeting, if you don't feel there is a great fit between us, I will work hard to connect you to people who may be a better fit for you. Let's make this process as stress-free and successful for your needs as we can.
As a play therapist with six years of experience, I help children, adolescents, and express their feelings in alternative ways without limiting their ability to share their feelings. I believe in empathy at all times, which helps me be your compassionate partner in care. I look forward to identifying your strengths in our work together. With a focus on talk and play therapy, I take an individualized, empathic, and authentic approach to care. I'm passionate about meeting patients where they are and working from there to help them share their feelings and better express themselves. This growth takes place in an open and welcoming environment, with a person-oriented style tailored to your unique perspective and experiences. My path to becoming a therapist began when a coworker sought me out for advice about an interaction she had, wanting additional support to discuss her options and ultimately make a decision she felt was in her best interest. This experience deepened my commitment to providing focused care and attention to each individual, and I bring that same individualized treatment to every patient I work with today. In my spare time, I love getting lost in a good book!
Spring EOP is here for any step of recovery, whether or not you have been to treatment. We aim to bridge the gap between leaving treatment and the transition back to life. For individuals who need to work, attend school, and have ongoing family obligations, the limited time outpatient therapy provides may not be enough to sufficiently support the investment that’s been made in residential treatment with the continued journey of sobriety. Many clients who have experienced residential treatment find that there is a greater need for clinical support beyond one session weekly; at Spring EOP we are here to support this transition with continued, consistent care. Additionally, we understand not everyone is ready for treatment, a client does not have to be transitioning out of a higher level of care to be an ideal client for us. We are there for every step of the recovery. We offer support to loved ones through CRAFT group as well as therapy for couples, family, and loved ones. We accept ages 15 and up.
