Life throws many challenges at us and sometimes it can be hard to know what to about these challenges. I work with clients who struggle with anxiety and depression and are feeling down more than usual or aren't feeling like they belong. I know what it feels like to not feel good enough, to worry about what people think of you, and to constantly be there to help others but not always be there for yourself. If this is something you struggle with, I am confident we can work together to navigate these issues. We can add more joy and take away stress from your life.

When you enter my office, you enter a safe space intended for change. Asking for help is not always easy and you are taking the first steps towards a gratifying life. Healing is a journey, and I would love to join you down this path to accomplish your goals. I am here to listen and support you every step of the way. During our time together I hope we can identify what is holding you back and create a plan that best supports you. Most things in life are not one-size-fits-all and the same applies to therapy practices. You are the expert in your own experience so I will tailor my skills to best fit your needs. Before coming to Better Life, I worked with adoptees and their families to manage programs and foster community. Some of my other work includes facilitating group discussions, leading activities that promote self-identity and character, helping youth to take on a positive self-view, and supporting social interaction for older adults.

I believe that every individual is worthy of a safe therapeutic space to process, grow and heal. I am an empathetic therapist who creates an opportunity for others to understand their emotions while equipping them with practical tools to cultivate new, healthier patterns of thinking and/or behavior. I am dedicated to helping you navigate life’s challenges whether it is related to personal growth, life changes, relationships, or trauma. I specialize in eating disorders, anxiety, OCD, trauma, survivors of partner violence and working with adolescents. I draw from several different therapeutic approaches including cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and art therapy with a mindfulness foundation to support you in your journey.

I like to begin by listening to why you are here, what you need out of therapy, and how I can support you. Weathering change or difficult realities can be isolating and overwhelming, and you are brave to reach out for support. I aim to create a reliable container and relationship that benefits your growth. You’ve known yourself the longest, so you will be in the expert in our relationship. I believe you deserve access to care that is transparent and informed, which is part of why I share that I am queer and will offer a queer-informed approach. Learning more about ourselves and accepting challenges can be daunting, and I would love to support you in doing so. I specifically have experience in working with OCD and other anxiety disorders. I use modalities such as dialectical behavior therapy, exposure and response prevention therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. I love working with youth, adolescents, and adults.

Hello, I am Dr. Ana Dodson. I am a licensed psychologist candidate, and I received two masters degrees and my doctorate in psychology at the University of Colorado in Denver. I am EMDR certified for both children and adults and have a certificate in the Neurosequential Model of Education developed by Dr. Bruce Perry, a neurobiological approach to understanding human development. My goal is to provide you with compassionate, personalized therapy services. Together, we'll work together to create goals that feel right for you. With my background as a former teacher and reading specialist, I have a deep understanding of how academic struggles and reading difficulties can impact a college student. I approach every situation with empathy and a focus on solutions. Outside of therapy, I love spending time with my son, reading books, traveling, and taking hikes.

Being authentic matters to me. I show up as a real person in the therapy room, and I want you to feel like you can do the same. My goal is to create a space where you can be yourself, open up, and unpack everything you’ve been carrying: the stress, the thoughts you keep to yourself, the experiences you’ve been through, and all the stuff life has handed you. When people feel safe enough to be honest and real, that’s when therapy really helps. I’m informal, down-to-earth, and easy to talk to. I believe that the relationship between us is far more important than any technique or theory. When you feel comfortable, understood, and really seen, you’re more likely to take risks, speak your truth, and make real changes. That said, I do bring strong clinical training when it’s useful. I have advanced training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy from the Albert Ellis Institute in New York. REBT is one tool in my toolbox and something we can use to help you understand and challenge your thoughts, shift unhelpful patterns, and create new ways of responding to stress, relationships, and life in general. But therapy with me isn’t rigid or overly structured. It’s a conversation. It’s two humans sitting down, figuring things out together. If you’re motivated to change, to feel better, to understand yourself more deeply, or to get clearer about where you want your life to go, I can help you.

My approach to therapy is person-centered and focuses on identifying & building upon one’s internal strengths, rather than deficits. I view the therapeutic process as a collaborative partnership. Together, we work toward goals that feel authentic and meaningful to you. I offer consistent, unconditional support while also “keeping it real” in a way that enables honesty, growth, and connection. Authenticity is one of my core values, and I hope that showing up as my true self encourages a foundation of safety and trust in our work together. I respect every client’s individual experiences, journey, culture and viewpoints and I offer a welcoming space to explore client’s concerns, goals, etc. I believe everyone carries a unique story, and sometimes life’s challenges or traumas can distort the way we understand ourselves. My goal is to help clients reframe their narratives, develop more compassionate self-talk, and navigate life’s ups and downs with greater confidence and ease. We all have inherent strengths and I strive to help clients identify, reclaim, and nurture those unique gifts. I have extensive experience in the mental health field across a variety of settings, working with adults of diverse backgrounds and concerns. Much of my work has included supporting neurodivergent clients (particularly ADHD), LGBTQIA++ individuals, folks going through difficult life transitions and women with complicated trauma. I specialize in trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, and grief. I also have a passion for working with members of the kink community and the geriatric population.

I earned my B.A. in Psychology from Towson University and am currently enrolled at the University of Denver, working toward my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Psychology. A little bit about myself, I love pets and the outdoors, and I am a self-proclaimed nerd who loves lots of different kinds of video, card, and board games. I am devoted to nurturing and creating meaningful change within individuals, helping them cultivate resilience, embrace their authentic selves, and live in alignment with their personal values and identity. I believe mental health challenges do not discriminate and can affect anyone, which is why I am committed to creating a space where clients feel empowered to do the work that feels necessary for them. As I continue to grow in my clinical training, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches, including existential therapy, family systems, psychodynamic theory, and mindfulness, tailoring my support to what best fits each individual client. I am passionate about working with individuals, families, groups, and couples navigating life's transitions and challenges, including anxiety, ADHD, depression, trauma, and the search for meaning. My goal is to foster healthy relationships, authenticity, autonomy, and interconnectedness within each person, supporting them in becoming healthier, more resilient individuals who can succeed in their own life's journey on their own terms, in accordance with their truths and ideal selves.

I earned my B.A. in psychology from Winthrop University and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver. As a clinical intern, I take a deeply relational approach to therapy, grounded in cultural awareness, developmental understanding, and a commitment to meeting clients exactly where they are. I believe that people grow through connections, and I work collaboratively to build a therapeutic relationship that feels safe, authentic, and genuinely supportive. I enjoy working with children, teens, and adults as they navigate identity development, relationship concerns, and major life transitions. I strive to create a warm, attuned space where clients can explore their experiences, make meaning of their stories, and move toward greater clarity and self-understanding. Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy watching movies, playing outdoor club soccer, and practicing the clarinet to help me stay grounded, creative, and balanced.

“With adversity comes opportunity” from the I Ching- Or Book of Changes The decision to seek therapy can be due to times of stress or the desire to seek change. We know that change is not always a straight path. To take a “road less traveled” can be filled with a beautiful river that flows and leads to clarity or it be a be a river filled with large boulders that need to be traversed with help and support. Therapy can be a tool that facilitates resilience and transformation. My approach in therapy is to first engage in a process of discovery. As your therapist, we will work together to discover what events, situations, and relationships in your life or your past do not work for you now. It is really important to understand how your life works in order to set goals and create change. Most importantly, it is important to remember that change affects all the people in your life. I work best with students who are high-achieving, thoughtful, and often putting a lot of pressure on themselves to succeed. Many of the students I support feel anxious, overwhelmed, or burned out, even when things look “fine” on the outside. I also work closely with students from multicultural backgrounds who are navigating identity, family expectations, or a sense of not fully belonging. I have extensive experience supporting students who have been impacted by trauma, including sexual assault, relationship violence, and other difficult life experiences. I spent four years working at the Office of Victim Assistance at CU Boulder, and I bring a steady, compassionate approach to creating a space where students feel safe, supported, and in control of their healing process.
