Therapists for college students near University of Pittsburgh
The families and students who thrive in my practice often arrive seeking support for the very real challenges they face—challenges that can feel isolating, overwhelming, or misunderstood in other settings. Many of my clients are navigating: Autism and the need for a more affirming, strength-based approach that values neurodiversity. ADHD and the daily push-pull of focus, impulsivity, and emotional intensity. The lingering effects of trauma, where safety, trust, and connection need to be rebuilt. Executive function struggles that impact school, home routines, and relationships. Emotional regulation challenges, especially when big feelings lead to big reactions. A deep desire to improve family communication, but feeling stuck in old patterns. What they share is not just the presence of these challenges—but also a commitment to change, a curiosity about their own growth, and families who want to better understand and support one another. In our work together, we don’t just manage behaviors—we build insight, confidence, and skills. We make space for emotional expression, teach tools that empower independence, and strengthen co-regulation and communication across the whole family system.

College is an exciting time though it can be an overwhelming one as well. College comes with its own unique set of challenges - increased workload, the need for greater time management, increased independence, and trying to find a good work-life balance, to name a few. College life can bring on new anxiety or exacerbate pre-existing anxiety, and managing this and coping in healthy and effective ways can prove difficult at times. Anxiety and stress can also trigger new or worsen pre-existing Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), like excoriation disorder (skin picking) and trichotillomania (hair pulling). If you are a female student struggling with anxiety and need help managing it, and/or are having a difficult time with BFRBs, I would love to work with you. Together we will work on identifying stressors/triggers as well as strategies and skills you can use to better manage your anxiety and/or your BFRB. I look forward to meeting you!

I incorporate mind-body interventions to help clients manage their symptoms. My therapeutic approach is evidence-based & integrative. I have extensive trainings and experience in trauma therapy & dialectical behavioral therapy.

I will help you explore how thoughts impact emotions and behaviors, challenge negative self-talk, and cultivate skills such as emotion regulation. Reaching out for help can feel intimidating. I aim to foster a warm and non-judgmental atmosphere for you to freely share. I would be honored to help you navigate in the direction of your values and goals.
I work really well with "type A" people with anxiety - those who are pragmatic and practical and used to getting stuff done, but now are finding it harder to make decisions and get as much done as they used to. I also work well with people who are accused of being "robotic" or "without feelings." Couples have claimed to actually enjoy working with me for premarital counseling, or figuring out how to deal with their parents/siblings/friends who might not be in favor of their match. In my office I try to speak plainly and say what needs to be said - you won't feel like you need to watch your language or censor yourself in any way.
I help individuals struggling to have power over themselves and their decisions. I also help couples and families who are struggling to maintain trust and connection in their relationships. Sometimes we feel stuck in a vicious cycle or pattern of behaviors that we need extra help interrupting. I help empower clients to help themselves, break the cycle and create a new pattern on their own terms.
Therapy is more about building new associations, making new, healthier default pathways. It is almost as if therapy is taking your two-lane dirt road and building a four-lane freeway alongside it. The old road stays, but you don’t use it much anymore. Therapy is building a better alternative, a new default. And that takes repetition, and time, honestly, it works best if someone understands how the brain changes. This is why understanding how trauma impacts our health is essential for everyone.” ~ Dr. Bruce Perry I am a licensed professional counselor with over 10 years of experience in various mental health settings such as Outpatient facilities, Inpatient hospitals, Crisis Center, but mainly in public and private alternative school settings. I received my master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Bryn Mawr College in 1995, and have been a therapist since that time. I have been in private practice in State College since 2006. My approach to therapy is diverse; I tend to practice from primarily interpersonal and psychodynamic perspectives, although I also draw from cognitive-behavioral paradigms. I see my role as provider of a safe and supportive environment in which to help individuals become more aware of the multiple aspects of themselves. A main component of the therapy consists of understanding how each person’s ‘story’ impacts who they are, and affects the difficulties they presently face. Clients are encouraged to consider their readiness for change as well as options for change that are both meaningful and realistic to them.
