My therapeutic style is collaborative, creative, and grounded in both trauma-informed and person-centered care. I believe that therapy works best when clients feel safe, heard, and understood. Building trust and genuine connection is at the core of my approach, and I strive to meet each client with empathy and curiosity rather than judgment. I draw from evidence-based modalities while tailoring treatment to the individual. This means our work together may include strategies from CBT, psychodynamic therapy, DBT, mindfulness, or strengths-based frameworks. I highly value your voice in the process and view therapy as a shared space where we can explore challenges, deepen insight, and build tools for healing and growth. I am especially passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and others navigating identity, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relational stress. Together, we’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, and make sure to honor your strengths and resilience every step of the way.
Hello! I am Dr. Amy Lee, I am a licensed clinical psychologist, a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA®), a member of the prestigious National Register of Health Service Psychologists organization, and a certified perinatal mental health expert. I have approximately 10 years working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Generally, my patients view me as someone who is transparent, humorous, and flexible in therapy. My "typical" patients tend to have difficulties regulating their emotions/impulses, tolerating stressful situations, and feeling overwhelmed and guilty about almost "everything." I have success with patients who have depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, work-related problems, family conflict, a history of trauma, relationship challenges, and social skills deficits. Please visit my website to get a feel of what I am like as a psychologist. I also provide one free 15-minute consultation to ensure that I can help you meet your goals, determine if we are a good fit, and answer any questions you may have about therapy.

Trauma can be an invisible wound that can affect many parts of our lives we don’t even realize. I work with clients with depression, anxiety, adoption triad concerns, and trauma-related issues. Change can be hard. Having the courage to reach out and discuss your inner pain and anxiety is the first step. I want to help you work through your past painful experiences, feelings of shame, and traumatic events so that you can create a new life path. I believe each person has their own pace, and am willing to find therapies and strategies that work for you. My approach is open-minded, trauma-based, cognitive, and holistic. I started my career in psychology and counseling when I experienced a suicide in my family. It gave me the courage to make changes for myself, and help people around me who were also suffering grief, loss, and depression. I’m an advocate of mental health issues, a proud adoptee, and a supporter of the arts. **I only accept insurance in the state of North Carolina**
I'm fluent in Mandarin and English, I have worked with many international students who struggle with cultural adjustment, immigration status, interpersonal relationship and other challenges in college life. I was an international student and I knew how challenging it could be to study abroad. I would like to be a good listener and care for students' mental health. In terms of my approaches, I help students use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to view their life in a more comprehensive way by analyzing their automatic thoughts. I also guide them to be aware of body sensation and be able to calm through mindfulness practice (a technique from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy).
As a therapist, I take a collaborative and supportive approach with my clients. I work with students facing anxiety and depression—whether tied to academic pressures or other factors—as well as those managing chronic illnesses or disabilities. I also support students who are navigating relationship challenges with friends, family, or romantic partners, and those going through significant life transitions. College is a time of profound change, often sparking a desire to explore who we are—our past, our present, and the person we hope to become.

I believe that each person wants to find fulfillment in life, and that through the therapeutic relationship, we can work together to achieve this goal. In today's world, there are so many pressures and obstacles that people face on a daily basis. I work to help people identify the factors that affect their lives, assist them in gaining insight into the causes of their problems, and develop real-life solutions to address problematic issues. I use techniques from various types of therapy to achieve this. I work to help people identify their strengths in order to increase resiliency and autonomy and develop growing self-respect. I specialize in treating couples, college students and young professionals, and individuals with borderline personality disorder. I have extensive training in emotionally-focused couples therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy, and I draw from these approaches to best treat each unique person and couple. Perhaps more than any other part of therapy or specific technique, I believe that my empathy, genuine care, and desire to help people are my greatest assets. I devote myself completely to my work and to the people I treat, and strive to make treatment as effective and meaningful as possible, with the continuous goal of creating progress in people's lives.

I have worked with individuals across the lifespan and specialize in working with individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, grief and loss, complex life transitions, interpersonal and gender-based violence and systems-related stressors. These experiences can all quietly reshape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through each day. Sometimes these experiences feel sudden and acute. Other times, they build slowly until something that once felt manageable starts to feel like too much. I also bring a unique lens from my background as a postpartum doula, where I supported birthing people and families through the emotional and physical transitions of early parenthood. My approach to therapy is relational, collaborative, and strengths-based. I believe that each person's experiences and needs are unique, so I am less interested in delivering a formula and more interested in understanding what's actually going on for you. I work collaboratively with patients to create a space that feels supportive, genuine, and emotionally safe. Starting therapy for the first time can feel intimidating, vulnerable, or even emotionally draining. You don't need to have everything figured out before beginning therapy, and you also don't need to wait until things feel "bad enough" to deserve support. Therapy is a process, and it's okay if opening up takes time. It's important to remember that things can often feel harder before they start to feel better – that's not a sign something is wrong. The right therapeutic space will allow you to feel comfortable being honest at your own pace, without fear of judgment.
When life feels unpredictable or overwhelming, therapy offers a space to pause and find your footing. Balancing academic pressure, family expectations, and questions about identity can feel especially heavy. I work with students navigating transitions such as starting a new school, adjusting to college, graduating, or finding their place in demanding environments. Therapy with me is a supportive, judgment-free space where you can openly explore stress, identity, relationships, past experiences, and self-doubt. Together, we’ll build coping tools, confidence, and self-compassion, so you don’t have to carry everything on your own.
