In my practice, I always make the effort to meet my clients where they're at in their lives in a non-judgmental and non-pathologizing manner as I assume that many of the behaviors people want to change may have served a really important purpose at some point in their history. Life is hard and we're all trying to navigate its challenges as best we can. Clients who tend to work well with me are often curious about their history and willing to explore how previous experiences contribute to the concerns they are wanting to address in the present. This information will be used to help clients reconnect with who they truly are so they can begin to live a life that is authentic and satisfying.
The Brown Therapy Center clinicians are a professional and experienced group of psychotherapists who come from a diverse range of educational backgrounds and specialties. As seasoned guides and intentional listeners, we aim to meet you where you are on your journey, providing insight and facilitating healing along the way and tailoring our treatment methods to meet the unique needs of each client. Though we draw from the traditional psychoanalytic frameworks including the work of C.G. Jung, we aim to take an integrative approach to counseling that incorporates elements of philosophy, spirituality, and perspectives from across cultures. In addition to more holistic models, our clinicians are highly versed in scientifically validated approaches, various somatic modalities, and psychedelic integration.

Many of the clients I work with are thoughtful, self-aware people who feel stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Many are high-functioning on the outside but feel anxious, emotionally exhausted, or unsure of themselves on the inside. They often care deeply about their relationships and may be navigating repeated conflict, trust issues, or a life transition that’s prompting them to want something different, even if they’re not fully sure what that looks like yet. Therapy with me is warm, collaborative, and focused on real change. I help clients slow down, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and build practical tools they can use in everyday life. Clients who are open to reflection, honest conversations, and gradual growth.
Therapy is a space to feel heard, understood, and supported. Clients here often come navigating life transitions, relationship struggles, or emotional challenges, seeking clarity and relief. Sessions are warm, collaborative, and focused on creating a safe place for growth and healing. Special focus on anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, self-esteem, postpartum, and relationship challenges. Sessions explore how past experiences shape the present while incorporating practical CBT and mindfulness tools to foster resilience, insight, and meaningful change.
Many of the individuals and couples I work with come to me because they are feeling disconnected from themselves and out of sync in their significant relationships. As a therapist, it is my passion to help clients feel more connected to themselves and others. I provide individual and couples therapy that will help you develop skills to navigate complex emotions and deepen your self-awareness, leading to an improvement in your emotional well-being and the quality of your relationships.
My therapeutic style is warm and genuine and I like to use humor when appropriate. I am a big proponent of using therapeutic techniques that have good research evidence demonstrating their effectiveness. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for adolescents and adults. CBT teaches clients coping skills to manage their emotions and behaviors. It also changes clients' emotions by helping them change their thoughts and behaviors. I provide CBT to address the following presenting problems: depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and difficulties adjusting to major life changes. DBT is an adaption of CBT that was developed to help clients with multiple problems in multiple areas who struggle with chronically dysregulated emotions. These clients may also have suicidal behaviors, self-harm behaviors, impulsive behaviors, difficulties in their interpersonal relationships, and/or Borderline Personality Disorder. I also have specialty training in the DBT Prolonged Exposure protocol for individuals with comorbid Borderline Personality Disorder and PTSD. In terms of my education and experience, I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Stony Brook University in 2014. I then participated in my first postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington with Dr. Marsha Linehan, the developer of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Afterwards, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Jacqueline Pistorello at the University of Nevada, Reno, focusing on providing clinical services to college students and conducting research on evidence-based treatments for suicidal behaviors. As a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, I taught medical students, psychiatry residents, and child psychiatry fellows about psychology, therapeutic techniques, and how to interact with patients. I opened my private practice in 2017 in Reno, Nevada and recently moved to Virginia.
Growing up, you learned early on that trusting others could be dangerous. You were taught to rely only on yourself, and that self-reliance has served you well. You’ve achieved so much—your degree, your job, and a comfortable life. Yet, despite these accomplishments, your mind still feels like it’s in survival mode. The nights are restless, your emotions seem unpredictable, and you’ve tried filling the void with drinking, partying, and casual relationships, but it never quite works. You’ve felt frustrated as your emotions are often labeled as angry or aggressive, leaving you feeling misunderstood and isolated. Trusting only yourself has taken you far, but it’s not enough to bring the peace and fulfillment you crave. I recognize how these experiences have shaped your life, affecting your relationships and overall well-being. Together, we’ll work on building trust, setting healthy boundaries, and learning to identify and name your emotions. Let's challenge and unlearn the limiting belief that you’re destined to succumb to the hardships you may face due to your upbringing, gender, or skin color. My goal is to create a space where you can address and work through the tough conversations often avoided in your past, fostering deeper healing and growth.
Are You Ready to Create Positive Lasting Change? “Change is not merely necessary to life – it is life.” – Alvin Toffler Few things in life, if any, are as constant as change! Whether or not we are ready for it, change comes to us in many forms and in many ways – in our personal and professional relationships, in where we live, in our career paths, in our life goals and ambitions, and in how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. However, despite the continuity of change, coping with it can be a difficult and troubling experience. Change often causes us to step outside of what’s familiar and comfortable – bringing up new questions, unsettling emotions, and uncertainty about life and our place in it. In order to survive, we must learn to accept and navigate change. But survival is just the beginning… To achieve true success, we must go beyond becoming comfortable with change. We must learn to create the changes we want and need! It can take a lot of work. But despite the difficulties, you’ll find few things in life more profoundly rewarding than being able to create positive lasting change. Whether you’re trying to cope with current life changes or actively working to create the life you desire, there may be nothing so important as having an objective and highly-skilled partner to help you along the path to a better life. Helping people take control of their lives and create positive, lasting change is exactly what I do. And I love doing it! I’ve learned to create the life I’ve always wanted, and I know no greater joy than helping others do the same. If I can do it, so can you. Please keep reading for more information or contact me today, 510-486-1188 or karenrosemft@rose-counseling.com. I look forward to hearing from you. How My Work Can Work For You The first step necessary for coping with – and creating – change is to identify where you are now as well as the life you’d like to create. And, through a combination of thoughtful questioning and out-of-the-box thinking, I’ve helped countless clients do just that. Once we’ve established a clear set of goals for our work together, you will be ready to learn the strategies, tools, and skills necessary to create a life of meaning and self-fulfillment. Then, using a variety of techniques such as solution-focused, short-term counseling, in-depth psychotherapy, psychospirituality, dreamwork, and other methodologies, I can help you overcome anxiety and depression, conquer recurring obstacles, discover meaning, and create a life you’re proud to call a true success! Solution-Focused Counseling – This relatively brief method of counseling can help relieve current symptoms you may be experiencing (such as anxiety or depression), facilitate better communication with others, reduce stress, and help you feel better. Long-Term Psychotherapy – My use of longer-term psychotherapy includes Jungian depth work, dream work, and psychospirituality. This type of therapy can help you explore who you are, discover meaning and purpose in life, and achieve a greater level of self-understanding. Career Counseling – The career counseling services I provide can help identify areas in your life (career, relationships, spirituality, etc.) where you feel called to be more aligned with your purpose. With that knowledge in hand, I can help you acknowledge and overcome any barriers preventing you from achieving your dreams.
I work with people of all ages on relationship and mental health issues. Many of the students I work with share this in common: they are navigating a major change and trying to find solid ground again. Some are living away from home for the first time, juggling academic pressure, identity shifts, and relationships. Others are coping with chronic health issues, burnout, or stress that feels heavier than it used to. Many describe feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of their next step, even though they’re usually the ones others look to. I help young adults understand what is happening beneath the stress and build tools that make daily life lighter and more manageable. My style is warm, practical, and grounded in the mind-body connection. This is a space where you can be brutally honest, reflect deeply, and grow exponentially. I provide services via Telehealth with morning hours Monday through Thursday; I keep a boutique style practice so you are not just another number- support is available upon request during off hours. To start, I offer a complimentary meet & greet that you can schedule directly online at www.marinahealthca.com so you can feel the fit for yourself. You deserve more than coping skills and trying to survive. Start your day with your mental health in focus and let us begin thriving through change, together. You can read more about me on my website and on my socials (IG: @nushanouhiphd).
